Gavin Varejes Proud to Participate in yet Another Springbok Jersey Ceremony
In the build-up to the Springbok’s match against the Barbarians in London, Gavin Varejes was invited to present the players with their jerseys. It is the second time he has presented the national team with their jerseys in this time-honoured tradition, the first time being in 2013 under coach Heyneke Meyer. Earlier in 2016 he also had the privilege to perform this duty for the national sevens team, the Springbok Bliztboks.
The Springbok’s Proud History
The Springboks are traditionally one of the most dominant teams in world rugby. They have received the William Webb Ellis Trophy twice for winning the 1995 and 2007 World Cups and have consistently been at the top of the sport's rankings. Their fiercest rivals throughout rugby history have been New Zealand’s All Blacks. South Africa beat the All Blacks in the historic 1995 World Cup final in an overtime victory that was considered the greatest moment in the nation’s sporting history, while the All Blacks exacted their revenge in 2015 by knocking out the Springboks in a pulsating semi-final victory before going on to win the tournament. The Springboks are famed for their power, size and strength as a rugby playing nation.
An Intense International Rugby Schedule
The players on the Springbok team have a busy international match schedule, which comes after a gruelling national and international club competition. They compete against Australia, Argentina and New Zealand annually in the Rugby Championship, and host or tour to Northern Hemisphere nations as well. Gavin Varejes handed out the team jerseys prior to the Springboks’ opening match of their 2016 Northern Hemisphere tour.
